The 20 Best Work Sneakers for Women in 2024, Tested & Reviewed by Fashion's Experts

Publish date: 0001-01-01

Office dress codes are more flexible than ever. As a result, even the trendiest sneakers of the year have become modern workwear staples that are an integral part of personal style at the office—for sneakerheads and casual wearers. Almost everyone has white sneakers or a pair of black sneakers kept on reserve under their desk. “We reached peak sneaker [era even] before the pandemic, and it feels like they've had a spot in most workwear wardrobes for a while,” says Laurel Pantin, a Los Angeles-based stylist and the author behind Earl Earl, a personal style and shopping newsletter.

This is thanks, in part, to the rapid growth in the designer sneaker market, which offers a diversity of sneakers from houses like Alexander McQueen, Gucci, and Valentino, who have all co-signed the luxury sneaker wave. But over the last half-decade, as chunky sneakers made their eventual exit, "sneaker culture has shifted towards slender silhouettes like the Adidas Sambas, and look less traditionally athletic than their predecessors, with logos that are also less overt, if noticeable at all," says Pantin.

These styles, prime for the quiet luxury aesthetic, are the ideal sneakers for work, according to Elizabeth Cardinal Tamkin, a content director, personal stylist, and author of the newsletter, The Corner Booth, on Substack. "A [work] sneaker should be like the loafer of sneakers; they should be streamlined and classic," she says.

But that doesn't mean your work sneakers should be boring. Sneaker collector and content creator Diana-May Kirori, or @LadyDianaMay on social media, likes to strike a balance between fun and functional and reaches for her Wales Bonner x Adidas Sambas or Isabel Marant Beth sneakers, which can stand up to dressy and casual occasions and everything in between—like including the office. Both options have a sleek, streamlined silhouette that pairs well alongside suiting separates and easy summer work outfits.

Ahead, we tapped our experts and Marie Claire editors to share their picks for the best work sneakers—some tested by yours truly. Keep reading for our recommendations alongside care and styling tips.

Cariuma All Black Canvas Sneakers

Check out these low-top sneakers from Cariuma, which have over 9,000 five-star reviews and are among the best black sneakers available now. If the canvas material seems too casual for your workplace, you can get these sneakers in more upscale materials like suede or leather. They're available in over 20 shades and prints, including floral options, dotted iterations, and classic versions.

What's the Material?: Canvas, Suede, or Leather

My Review: I had high hopes for Cariuma's Canvas Sneakers, and I can honestly say they live up to the hype. I wore these for the first time on a trip to Colorado and hiked Red Rocks Amphitheater in them within 20 minutes of trying them on— without a single blister or pain. I also wore them into the office, and they blended in perfectly with the rest of my neutral wardrobe. They're durable, comfortable, and chic, and they still haven't caused me any blisters or pain.

Best Comfortable Work Sneakers

Sam Edelman Ethyl Low Top Sneakers

Simply put, these all-white sneakers from Sam Edelman are the sort of shoes you'll want to wear 24/7. The soft leather fabrication molds to your feet as you move throughout the day. If you don't need another pair of white sneakers in your collection, they come in silver and rose gold shades. The sneaker's insole is removable, too, which means you can wash and clean it as needed.

Marie Claire's Review: "When shopping for work sneakers, I prioritize comfort. I live 40 minutes away from my job, with a commute that involves a train transfer and a bit of walking, so I need to be able to climb stairs, walk, and even run without worrying about breaking a heel or developing a blister. At the same time, I would never sacrifice style for function—after all, I work at a fashion magazine. These sneakers are the perfect balance, with soft leather that doesn't chafe against the backs of my ankles and cushiony soles that make me feel like I'm walking on little pillows." — Beauty Writer Gabrielle Ulubay

Best Leather Work Sneakers

Tory Burch Howell Court Sneakers

There's nothing quite like a pair of crisp sneakers in the summertime. They’re reliable for any situation (including the office) and make getting dressed in the morning a little easier. With a crisp and streamlined look, this leather pair from Tory Burch is a shoe to add to your workwear rotation. You can choose from five different color trims.

What's the Material?: Leather

Marie Claire's Review: "I'm getting fatigued with It-sneakers—ones you can recognize from three New York City blocks away because they're so obviously branded. Tory Burch's Court pair is the perfect antidote: They're just as well-designed but still fly a little under the radar with their minimal, unbranded look. Whether I want to wear an oversized suit or an office-appropriate midi dress, the clean white leather goes with it all. I also love that the soles are slightly padded so that I can spend a full day on my feet without any complaints. These may be the only work shoes that I could also pack for a European vacation where 10,000-step days are on the itinerary. As much as I love my ballet flats, I can't say the same thing about those." — Senior Beauty & News Editor Halie LeSavage

Best Sleek Work Sneakers

Adidas Samba OG Sneakers

Adidas' Sambas animal-free sneakers aren't ending their It-sneaker reign in 2024. Beloved by Bella Hadid, Kaia Gerber, and other A-listers, they're as suited to the office as on a celeb. Fashioned to look part soccer shoe, part fashion-girl favorite, they're sporty while still feeling polished, and they're one of the most trend-driven sneakers on today's market (and this list).

What’s the Size Range?: US Sizes 5-15, including half-sizes

What's the Material?: Leather

My Review: I’ve had my Sambas for almost two years and logged many a mile in them during that time. I find that, for work, they’re the perfect low-key, versatile option. They’re easy to clean, go with almost anything (including my summer dresses), and don’t make my feet ache after a workday. While I wouldn’t recommend them for long days of walking or travel, there’s a reason they’re still so quick to sell out—they’re the ideal elevated-yet-sporty sneaker that makes any outfit look cooler.

Best Sporty Work Sneakers

Reebok Classic Nylon Sneakers

Pantin is a fan of this nylon pair from Reebok. "I'm partial to the navy," she says, referencing a colorway exclusive to the men's edition. With a foam insole, a '90s sensibility, and a rubber tread at the bottom for extra grip as you move through the day, they're perfect if you spend hours on your feet. If your foot is too small to fit into the men's versions, you can shop it in a few other shades, including cream, another of Pantin's favorites. Well-priced at under $80, they're the perfect affordable work-to-weekend option.

How Many Colors Do They Come In?: Five for women, seven for men

What's the Size Range?: US Sizes 5-11, including half-sizes

What's the Material?: Nylon

My Review: I tested Laurel's exact pick—the men's variation of the sneaker in navy blue—for a few reasons. I wanted to test how small the men's shoes go with a size 5 foot, and I preferred the navy blue to the color options in the women's selection. The men's size 3.5 fit and they were one of the most comfortable options on this list. At $75, they're also one of the most affordable. They were comfortable, easy to style for a sportier look, and offered my neutral outfits a touch of color— but not too much— which is a bonus. Shop for them in one of the whopping 12 shades—and you can opt for a men's shade using the size chart even if you're foot runs on the petite side.

What to Look for in Work Sneakers

How to Keep Work Sneakers Clean

Sneakers worn for outdoor activities can get as dirty as you like, but work sneakers should be kept clean and polished. While some shoes on this list are machine-washable, that's not common in the sneaker space.

Wiping them down with water will remove most daily grime on leather shoes, and a stain-removal pen will also do the trick. Keep them in top shape by taking them to a cobbler for a professional cleaning and to reinforce soles.

Storage is also important. Keeping your shoes on a designated rack will protect them from the dust and dirt around your home.

How to Style Work Sneakers

The key to making your sneakers work in the office is to style them with other elevated options. If you opt for white sneakers, style them with dark hues that will pop. Tamkin likes to even dress down a suit with her cleanest sneakers.

“I love the contrast of the casual-cool sneaker with the tailored suiting, a styling method I call the contradistinction technique,” she says. Take some risks by combining two pieces that traditionally contradict each other—but make for a perfect outfit—similar to the wrong shoe theory or the sandwich method. To incorporate some color, choose a shade that plays well with other neutrals.

Even your favorite A-listers have opted for sneakers instead of heels for their work outings. Jessica Alba used bright white sneakers to offset her denim and play-up workwear staples like an oversized blazer. Cate Blanchett Blanchett opted for minimalist sneakers to streamline her trendy denim-on-denim outfit. Emily Blunt swapped her white sneakers for a color-blocked pair of Nikes that look polished alongside her all-black ensemble and work bag.
