Is 'The Hills: New Beginnings' Real or Scripted?
Remember that moment in 2010 when MTV destroyed our trust in reality television after basically revealing The Hills was fake? I like to forget about it too, but now that The Hills: New Beginnings is set to premiere on Monday, June 24, fans have one major question (aside from whether or not Audrina and Justin will hookup): Will the reboot be scripted?
Whitney Port—who stars in The Hills: New Beginnings, alongside your faves Justin Bobby, Audrina Patridge, Jason Whaler, Brody Jenner, Spencer Pratt, and Heidi Pratt—told Cosmo back in September that she "doesn't think the show is going to be scripted." (This is clearly before they officially started filming.)
"[Producers are] really going to look at what’s actually going on in our lives," she says. "There’s probably enough happening in all of our lives that it will speak for itself and [drama] won’t have to be created. Fans and viewers can see right through the fake stuff."
Meanwhile, The Hills showrunner Lauren Weber recently told The New York Times that although the show won't be scripted, that doesn't mean they won't purposely place the cast in certain situations, like where to sit. “We try to bring forth what they’re thinking," she says. “Spencer is about to say something, and it’s going to be to Jason and Ashley."
So, basically, the cast won't be reading lines word-for-word, but they're not exactly texting each other for dinner plans without a little head's up from the crew. Make of it what you will...but at least you'll be prepared this time around.
The Hills: New Beginnings premieres on MTV June 24 at 10 p.m. EST.
